US President Donald Trump has told his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelenskyy during a phone call that he wants to secure a peace agreement as quickly as possible.

"Zelenskyy then said he hopes the war will finish this year, and Trump replied that the war has been going on for far too long and said he would like the war to end in a month."

Axios reported that the half-hour call between Trump and Zelenskyy had been their first conversation since the two leaders met in Davos.

Axios added that "the call between Trump and Zelenskyy was very friendly and positive".

"The call took place a day after the fourth anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine and one day before Trump's envoys Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff will meet with Zelenskyy's negotiating team in Geneva."

Zelenskyy and Trump held a phone call on the evening of 25 February.
