The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe will hold urgent debates on the situation in Georgia on Thursday, May 10, as part of its spring session this week, according to Theodoros Roupopoulos, President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, during today's session.
The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe will also discuss further actions regarding the resolution adopted on Georgia, which concerns the ratification of the mandates of the Georgian delegation.
It should be noted that on January 29 this year, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe adopted a resolution calling for new elections in Georgia in the coming months.
In light of the review of the Georgian delegation's mandates and an overall assessment of the situation in the country, the Parliamentary Assembly decided to ratify the mandates of the Georgian delegation until April 2025, with certain conditions.
"PACE strongly demands that the Georgian authorities immediately initiate an inclusive process involving all relevant parties and social actors, including the ruling majority, opposition, and civil society, to urgently address the deficiencies and violations identified in the recent parliamentary elections, create an electoral environment that ensures the conduct of truly democratic new parliamentary elections, which should be announced in the coming months.
[PACE strongly demands that Georgian officials] take immediate and effective steps to allow Georgia to renew its European integration path, in line with the aspirations of the people, and expedite necessary reforms;
[PACE strongly demands that Georgian officials] immediately end police brutality and human rights violations, effectively investigate these incidents, end the misuse of legal processes for retaliation against demonstrators, journalists, and civil leaders, and fully respect the right to freedom of expression and assembly.
[PACE strongly demands that Georgian officials] release all political prisoners before the Assembly's session in April 2025," the resolution states.
The resolution also notes that based on progress on the aforementioned issues, the Assembly will have the opportunity to reassess the Georgian delegation's mandates (with the possibility of suspending them) during the April 2025 session.
The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe's spring session opened today in Strasbourg and will continue until April 11.
