Germany’s antitrust watchdog has given approval for Lufthansa to acquire a minority stake in Latvia-based carrier airBaltic.

The German competition authority cleared the merger on Monday, with the head of the antitrust agency, Andreas Mundt, explaining the decision in a statement.

"We had to clear the merger because on the whole, the routes affected constitute so-called minor markets with very low domestic sales volumes," Mundt said.

The approval marks a regulatory milestone for Lufthansa’s expansion plans involving the Baltic carrier.
