According to the 11-month figures of the current year, the Ministry of Internal Affairs expelled 1,131 illegal migrants from Georgia. This number corresponds to the total indicator of the past 7 years, – Prime Minister of Georgia Irakli Kobakhidze stated at today’s government meeting.
According to the Prime Minister, efficiency has significantly increased, though the Migration Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs needs to be strengthened even further.
“Over the past months, the efficiency of the Ministry of Internal Affairs has qualitatively increased, especially in such directions as fighting organized crime, corruption-related crimes, and drug-related crimes. The same applies to combating illegal migration, where we have impressive indicators. This year already - based on 11-month data - the Ministry of Internal Affairs expelled 1,131 illegal migrants from Georgia. This number corresponds to the total figures of the past 7 years. Efficiency has significantly improved; however, the Migration Department within the Ministry must be strengthened even more, and the Minister and the Ministry are actively working on this. Of course, all of this will reflect on future work in the direction of combating illegal migration. According to the plan presented by the Ministry of Internal Affairs, next year at least 3,500 illegal migrants will be expelled from the country. This is the minimum indicator. Overall, according to this plan, probably in 3–4 years the problem of illegal migration will be fully eliminated. The problem will be qualitatively eradicated, which is important in many respects, including from a security standpoint. I thank the Minister of Internal Affairs and the Ministry for the work already done and for future plans.” – said the Prime Minister.
