Mountain resorts are usually overcrowded at New Year. However, this year the hotels are suffering from a lack of holidaymakers. With bookings being cancelled, most hotels are pinning their hopes on the holidays, but it turns out that this period can’t boast of visitors either.
"Safiri Bakuriani" is one of the hotels where occupancy is low during the holidays. They say at “Commersant” hotel that only 40% of rooms are booked at New Year that is half of last year's figure.
From December 31 to January 8, the hotel occupancy rate is 40%. In fact, this is a very low figure. It should be at least 60-80% as only a few days left until the New Year. During this period last year, the number of New Year's reservations stood at 80-85%," the hotel says.
Along with the low level of new reservations, the hotel representatives talk about high level of hotel cancellations. They say that the current situation is most likely linked to the current political situation in the country.
"The cancellation of bookings is linked to and depends on the political situation in the country, and most likely this is one of the main reasons. We had quite a lot of long-term bookings cancelled. The bookings made from December 20 to 28 were cancelled as well as bookings for February. Given that this is the championship period, the hotel should have been full of guests, I cannot tell you what the cancellation is related to during this period. Some long-term bookings were cancelled a few weeks ago. Bookings for December, as well as for January and February have been cancelled. Bookings are mainly made by foreigners which are y cancelled now”- they say at "Safiri Bakuriani" hotel.
