The High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, reacted to the scandalous statement of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban – he compared his country’s membership in the EU with the Soviet occupation. Now he was reminded that no one is forcing Hungary to be a member of this union.
The head of EU diplomacy said this during the Europe and the World conference. He noted that Hungary really knows what occupation is since Soviet times, but its membership in the European Union is not at all similar.
“Honestly, I don’t see any similarity between the Soviet occupation of Budapest and what’s happening in Berlaymont (European Commission headquarters in Brussels – Ed.). I didn’t see a single tank there. Nobody obliges Hungary to be a member of the EU,” Borrell emphasized.
Let us recall that Orban made his scandalous statement about EU membership and the occupation of the USSR during a speech dedicated to the anniversary of the Hungarian anti-Soviet revolution of 1956, on Monday, October 23.
The politician accused the EU of allegedly wanting to deprive Hungary of its identity by imposing a model of liberal democracy.
As OBOZ.UA reported, Russian President Vladimir Putin held a meeting with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban in Beijing. During it, Orban noted that Hungary and Russia, despite the so-called special military operation and sanctions, continue to develop relations.
Let us recall that earlier the Hungarian prime minister again stated that Ukraine would not be able to win the war. He believes that the Russian occupying army has all the advantages to achieve its goal.
Now Hungary has blocked 500 million euros in military aid to Ukraine. In Budapest, a new demand was voiced against Kyiv.
