The number of live births equaled 40 214 in 2023 (21 010 boys and 19 204 girls), registering a 5.0 percent decrease from the previous year.

In 2023, the largest number of live births was recorded in Tbilisi (13 697) while the smallest – in Racha-Lechkhumi and Kvemo Svaneti Region (226).

Compared to 2022, in 2023 the share of the first order births in total live births decreased from 39.1 percent to 37.7 percent. The share of the second child remained almost unchanged and equaled 33.6, while the share of the third and next order births increased from 26.6 percent to 27.5 percent.

Compared to 2022, in 2023 the share of live births decreased for women aged 25-39 from 69.6 percent to 69.4 percent and for women aged less than 25 (from 26.5 percent to 24.6 percent), while increasing for women aged 40 years and older (from 4.0 percent to 6.0 percent).

The mean age of mothers at first birth in 2023 equaled 26.7 years.

In 2023, the number of deaths decreased by 13.0 percent in annual terms and totaled 42 756 persons. The largest number of deaths was recorded in Tbilisi (12 229) while the smallest – in RachaLechkhumi and Kvemo Svaneti Region (580).

According to the 2023 data, infant mortality rate (per 1 000 live births) equaled 8.2 ‰. The under-5 mortality rate (per 1 000 live births) in 2023 totaled 9.5‰.
