Georgia is among the top 20 countries in terms of the number of asylum seekers in the European Union. According to BPN.GE, this is noted in the EU Asylum Agency (EUAA) 2025 report, which has been published on its website.
According to the agency, in 2025, more than 15,000 Georgian citizens applied for asylum in Europe.
According to the report, Georgia ranks 17th on the list, surpassing Haiti (18th place), Guinea (19th), and Iraq (20th), while being almost equal to Eritrea, which is one position ahead.
"In 2025, the EUAA registered 15,295 applications for asylum from Georgia. Of these, 12,788 were first-time applications, and decisions were issued on 12,408 applications. The overall positive recognition rate for status was 0.05%, while the negative rate was 0.95%. 11,577 applications were under consideration, and 1,026 were withdrawn. The top 3 EU countries where Georgians applied for asylum were France, Italy, and Germany. The first-instance recognition rate (i.e., granting of status) was 6% in France, 4% in Italy, and 0% in Germany. For other EU countries, similar 0% recognition rates were recorded in Greece, 3% in the Netherlands, 7% in Austria, 9% in Ireland, 12% in Spain, and 23% in Belgium. First-instance decisions include all persons granted international protection (refugee or subsidiary protection) regulated by the EU. The decision on international protection in the first instance is made following the first or repeated application within the procedure. Regarding main citizenship applications, compared to 2024, there were 31% fewer applications from Georgia in Germany, while in Italy and Greece, conversely, there were 26% and 34% more applications, respectively. Overall, in 2025, approximately 822,000 applications for international protection were submitted in the 27 EU member states plus Norway and Switzerland (EU+), which is 19% fewer than in 2024. The decrease was mainly due to a reduction in Syrian applicants. Specifically, due to political events in Syria, the number of asylum-seeking applicants from Syria decreased from 151,000 in 2024 to 42,000 in 2025, or by 72%. Significant decreases were also recorded for Turks and Colombians. In contrast, the number of Afghan and Venezuelan applicants increased. Venezuelan applicants mainly entered the EU via visa-free travel, while the majority of Afghans were individuals already present in the bloc who submitted repeated applications. The highest number of applications was received in Germany, followed by France, Spain, and Italy, while per capita, Greece and Cyprus received the most applications. By the end of 2025, approximately 863,000 cases were processed in the first instance, and about 1.2 million cases across all instances. The recognition rate for refugee status by EU+ countries in 2025 decreased to 29% compared to 2024. The main reason is fewer decisions issued to Syrian applicants, who historically have higher recognition rates. The second reason is that more decisions were made for citizens of nationalities with low recognition rates," the information states.
