"The government should know how many people this law will touch, for how many it is unacceptable, and how many will be left without income," says Lasha Darbaiseli, Chairman of the Georgian Association of Auto Importers, says.

On the air of Commersant radio Lasha Darbaiseli points out that as the law takes effect, at least 50% of car dealers will have to leave the busines, causing hundreds of families to lose their income.

In his words, the announced rally can’t  be held in the specific district as they would not be able to obtain a permit. For this reason, a petition was drawn up and signed by numerous car dealers and car owners.

"Actually, many people's livelihoods depend on this business. These are people who, quite frankly, earn their daily bread and a meager income through it, and that opportunity is being taken away from them," Lasha Darbaiseli notes.

The petition says that 6 years is a very short period, and a car should be at least 10 years old.

"It's not true that we're indifferent to the environment and only think about business. Our children breathe this air too. Environmental conditions definitely need to be improved, but we don't believe this ban will be productive."

"In any case, it is important to involve industry and sector representatives and experts in the discussion. And if we agree that the fleet needs updating, the government should provide some benefits to the people," Lasha Darbaiseli points out.
