“Keeping reasonable prices for bread is the government’s main priority. Any decision to support farmers, producers or importers of grain will be based on this factor,” the Ministry of Agriculture says.
The statement was made in response to the dissatisfaction of Georgian farmers with the current prices.
Downward slide in global grain prices continues, including in Georgia, but as the Ministry notes, a few months ago the product price was much higher and farmers could profitably sell grain.
They expected further price hikes and refused to sell their crops but prices started declining instead of rising.
As per the Ministry, it regularly meets with wheat producers, members of wheat associations, bakers' associations and flour mills.
In a bid to simplify the sale of Georgian grain, the government has decided to lift restrictions on export of wheat.
The ministry states that Georgia imports flour at much cheaper price than wheat. This allows to provide the population with cheap bread and bakery products.
