Wizz Air will shut down its base at Vienna International Airport in two phases as part of a strategic fleet reallocation. Two aircraft and routes to Bilbao and London Gatwick will end on 26 October 2025, with the remaining three aircraft and all other routes ceasing on 15 March 2026.
The airline, which launched its Vienna base in 2018 and currently operates 28 routes to 20 countries with five Airbus A321neo aircraft, said rising airport costs, taxes, and ground handling fees have made operations incompatible with its ultra-low-cost model.
Passengers booked on affected flights will be offered refunds in WIZZ credits or rebooking options. Employees will be supported through relocation opportunities and alternative roles across Wizz Air’s network.
Despite the closure, Wizz Air pledged to continue serving Austrian travellers via its nearby bases in Bratislava and Budapest, where it plans further growth.
Managing Director Mauro Peneda called the move a “difficult, but necessary decision” to safeguard competitiveness while reaffirming Wizz Air’s commitment to affordable travel in Central Europe.
