The BRICS countries may launch a single payment system in 2026. This was reported on January 26 by the Berliner Zeitung (BZ) newspaper, citing sources.
"We are talking about the Brics Pay System. The goal is to create a cross—border digital payment architecture that will allow direct payments in national currencies," the materials say.
According to BZ, a proposal to interconnect national central bank digital currencies (CBDCs) to facilitate cross-border payments will be put on the agenda of the BRICS summit in 2026 by India, which will preside.
Russian Senator Vladimir Dzhabarov confirmed that no single currency will be created, but a single payment platform will appear. At the same time, it is noted that the expansion of the BRICS membership at the expense of large energy exporters enhances the strategic importance of settlements outside the dollar.
The Brics Pay system is designed to link national payment systems and, in the future, integrate the digital currencies of central banks, which will allow transactions to be conducted without the mediation of dollar clearing centers or Western systems.
On January 19, Reuters reported that the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) will propose to the BRICS countries to link digital currencies to simplify trade and payments in the tourism sector. It is noted that this initiative may cause irritation in the United States, which warned against any attempts to circumvent the dollar.
President of the United States Donald Trump has previously stated that the BRICS alliance is "anti-American" and threatened to impose duties of 100% on goods belonging to its members.
