Russia on Monday unilaterally announced a ceasefire for Victory Day celebrations and warned Ukraine that non-compliance would be met with massive strikes on Kyiv.

In a statement in Russian, the country’s defence ministry said President Vladimir Putin had declared a ceasefire on May 8-9 and expected Ukraine to abide by it.

Russia observes Victory Day on May 8-9 to mark the Allied victory over Nazi Germany in World War II. It is a national holiday that traditionally involves a major military parade. However, this year’s celebrations will not feature any parade or military vehicles amid fears of a potential Ukrainian strike.
