One of the main factors for strengthening Georgia’s energy independence is the diversification of energy sources. If the system depends on only one source, it is much more vulnerable to risks and shocks, - said Keiju Mitsuhashi, Energy Director at the Asian Development Bank, in response to a question from an InterpressNews correspondent.

As the ADB Energy Director notes, in addition to diversifying energy resources, it is necessary to develop transmission and electricity storage systems to ensure energy independence.

It is noteworthy that with the support of the Asian Development Bank, the first accumulator substation will be built in Georgia. In April 2025, the ADB approved a loan of $ 104 million for the project.

“When integrating different types of energy, it is very important to have a strong and sustainable “green” energy system. One of the key factors for strengthening energy independence in Georgia, as well as in other countries, is the diversification of energy sources. If the system depends on only one source or one technology, it becomes much more vulnerable to risks and shocks. Given the risks, it is necessary to diversify energy sources. One way to do this is to use different technologies and receive electricity from different regions.

In addition, ensuring connectivity is an important factor for strengthening energy independence. The transmission system plays a crucial role here, but the issue is not only about having enough capacity to transfer energy from one place to another - it is necessary to develop energy storage capabilities. This allows for the effective integration of different types of energy and the maintenance of stability in the energy system,” said Keiju Mitsuhashi at the 59th Annual Meeting of the ADB.

The Asian Development Bank’s annual meetings are being hosted by Samarkand, Uzbekistan, from May 3 to 6. The main theme of this year’s meetings is: “Crossroads of Progress: Advancing the Region’s Connected Future.”
