The refusal by countries to break free of their dependence on fossil fuels means they’re being held hostage to geopolitical chaos, Spanish PM Pedro Sánchez said, pledging to double down on the energy transition.

Addressing WindEurope’s Annual Event in Madrid, Sánchez outlined his vision for Europe to have the cheapest electricity in the world, powered by renewables. He highlighted how the current oil crisis has already cost the EU an additional €22 billion on energy imports while member states ignore the potential energy they can draw on their own from the wind and sun.

Italy used twice as much gas as Spain during the first month of the war. The electricity price difference between our two countries has exceeded €100,” Sánchez said. “So let’s be clear, the energy transition is not a slogan. It is a ticket to the future.”
