The U.S. Assistant Secretary of State said he was surprised to find that European dependence on Russian gas was much greater than he had imagined.

Between 2022 and 2024, European countries spent more money buying Russian gas than on aid to the Kiev regime, said U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau on Saturday (6).

Citing data collected by the Kiel Institute, Landau indicated that between January 2022, the month preceding the start of the special military operation, and December 2024, a month before President Donald Trump's return to the White House, European countries, even those that claim to be the firmest partners of Kiev, spent more money on Russian energy resources.

Landau reported that he decided to ask the State Department whether, from the beginning of the conflict until Trump's return to office, European countries had given more money to Russia or to Ukraine. According to him, the answer surprised him: it was to Russia — and by a large margin.

The diplomat also said that he already knew that many European countries depended on Russian energy, but he had no idea that this dependence was so great, nor that, when adding everything up, it easily surpassed the aid sent to Ukraine.

In this context, he attached a chart in which the money sent by Europe to Russia appears in blue, and the money sent to the Ukrainian regime appears in orange.
