Efforts to extinguish a large-scale fire in the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone are ongoing, and the radiation situation currently remains stable. The Ministry of Internal Affairs reported this on its Telegram channel, the Ukrainian News agency reports.
"As of 11:00 a.m. on May 8, the radiation situation in Ukraine (particularly in the north of the Kyiv Region) remains stable. According to data received from the National Hydrometeorological Service of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine, gamma radiation levels are within normal limits throughout the country. In the event of conflicting information appearing in the public sphere, please rely exclusively on official sources," the statement reads.
The Ministry of Internal Affairs notes that efforts to extinguish the large-scale fire in the Chornobyl Exclusion Zone are ongoing and promises to promptly provide updates on the radiation situation in the country.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, according to a statement from the State Emergency Service as of the morning of May 8, efforts to extinguish a large-scale forest fire are ongoing in the Exclusion Zone in the Kyiv Region; due to strong gusts of wind, the fire is rapidly spreading across the territory, engulfing new sections of the forest; the estimated area of the fire is already over 1,100 hectares.
