From August 1 of this year, the transportation of Azerbaijani natural gas to Syria via the Kilis pipeline via Türkiye will begin, APA-Economics reports, citing Turkish media.

“The new energy pipeline, which is considered an important step in the reconstruction of Syria, is planned to be commissioned on August 1. Natural gas from Azerbaijan will be delivered to Syria via the Kilis pipeline via Türkiye. This project aims to contribute to the restoration of Syria's damaged electrical infrastructure and to strengthening Türkiye's goal of becoming a regional energy center,” the report states.

It is noted that preparations for the transportation of natural gas have been completed under the recently signed document between SOCAR and Syria. In the first stage, 1.2 billion cubic meters of natural gas are planned to be sent to Syria annually. The gas will pass through the city of Kilis on the Turkish border and reach power plants in Aleppo and Homs, and will be used for electricity generation. Thanks to this, a production capacity of approximately 1,200-1,300 megawatts is targeted.

Recall that on July 12, as part of the working visit of the Transitional President of the Syrian Arab Republic, Ahmad Al-Sharaa, to Azerbaijan, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the State Oil Company of the Republic of Azerbaijan (SOCAR) and the Government of the Syrian Arab Republic.

The Memorandum was signed by Azerbaijan’s Minister of Economy and Chairman of the SOCAR Supervisory Board Mikayil Jabbarov and Syria’s Minister of Energy, Mohammed al-Bashir.
