On February 28, 2025, Microsoft announced that it is retiring services for Skype, the OG video-calling platform. After serving the notice period, from February to May, today is Skype's last working day. The company stated that Skype will no longer be available starting May 5. In defense, Microsoft says that this step aims to promote Teams. The official blog post stated, "In order to streamline our free consumer communications offerings so we can more easily adapt to customer needs, we will be retiring Skype in May 2025 to focus on Microsoft Teams (free), our modern communications and collaboration hub."
Today is Skype's last day, as announced by Microsoft. This forms part of the company’s strategy to streamline its communication services and focus on Microsoft Teams as the central platform for both personal and collaborative interactions. With the decision to consolidate its offerings, Microsoft aims to create a unified and modern communications hub.
-- Following the announcement, Microsoft has also discontinued the sale of paid Skype services for new users, including Skype Credit and calling plans.
- However, existing subscribers can continue using their services until the end of their current billing cycle, and any remaining credit will still be accessible even after the platform shuts down. Additionally, paid users will retain access to the Skype Dial Pad, either via the Skype web portal or directly through Microsoft Teams. But once that is over, you will have to bid goodbye to Skype.
To ensure a smooth handover, Microsoft gave users from February until May 2025 to migrate to Teams. During this time, support and resources will be made available to assist with the transition process.
