A total solar eclipse was visible Wednesday from Spain, a small part of Portugal, Greenland, Iceland and northern Russia — the first time since 1999 that mainland Europe has been treated to the spectacle.
Most of Europe, Canada and northwestern Africa, along with parts of the northern U.S., saw a partial solar eclipse.
Around the world, crowds gathered to watch the spectacle, donning eclipse glasses to see the moon block the sun’s light, casting its shadow onto the Earth. Lucky skywatchers along the path of totality celebrated and cheered as the moon fully covered the sun, turning day briefly into night.
