The European Affairs Committee of the French National Assembly has adopted a resolution on Georgia, the information is posted on the website of the French National Assembly.

At a session held on December 3, the European Affairs Committee of the French National Assembly supported a draft resolution that “condemns the illiberal and authoritarian regression of the Georgian government and reaffirms its support for Georgia’s European future.”

The resolution has been forwarded to the Foreign Affairs Committee for consideration.

The resolution calls on the French government to “support, in coordination with European partners, the imposition of targeted individual sanctions against the individuals mentioned in the European Parliament’s resolution of February 13, 2025, in particular Bidzina Ivanishvili and his close circle.”

The political situation in Georgia over the past few months has been worrying. After the parliamentary elections of October 26, 2024 the government demonstrated a departure from the previously established European course. The new government, which came to power under the Georgian Dream party, has initiated worrying changes, in particular, a move away from European democratic values and increased tensions with civil society. The departure was not unexpected. European institutions expressed concern as early as the summer of 2024: in June 2024, the European Council called for guarantees of fair elections and condemned the pressure on opponents and journalists. The elections of October 26, 2024, which were held under unfair conditions, confirmed these warnings,” reads the resolution.

According to the document, “the violations of human rights in Georgia, the repression of the opposition, the rewriting of history and the growing influence of Moscow confirm a systemic change.”

As a result, France and the European Union must act decisively to support the democratic principles, European sovereignty and aspirations of a large part of Georgian society for European integration,” reads the resolution.
