Over the past three years, car imports from Korea to Georgia have risen significantly.

According to Sakstat, in the first six months of 2022, 706 units of Korean cars valued at US$9 million were imported into the country (a figure that was even lower previously). This number grew to 1,348 units (worth US$20.613 million) during the same period in 2023. Furthermore, 1,804 units of Korean cars totaling US$23.970 million were imported in the 2024 reporting period, along with 1,281 units (valued at US$15.272 million) in the first six months of this year.

Furthermore, statistics reveal that the Republic of Korea ranks among the top five countries exporting cars to Georgia.

Why is the import of Korean cars on the rise?

Regarding the growing interest in Korean vehicles, Lasha Darbaiseli, the chairman of the Car Importers Association, states

that this interest stems from their technical and aesthetic qualities. Specifically, according to Lasha Darbaiseli, Korean cars typically exhibit lower mileage and are well-maintained.

«We have prohibited the registration of cars manufactured before 2013 and introduced some regulations. While our intention to protect the environment is evident, it seems we are simultaneously supporting one sector while undermining another, isn't that right?!

Environmental protection should consider that a car in perfect condition does not contribute to pollution. We have talked about this many times, that the age of the car has nothing to do with whether it will pollute the environment or not," =Lasha Darbaiseli stresses.
