"The Georgian insurance sector will not see significant revenue from mandatory insurance for foreign tourists," Devi Khechinashvili, President of the Insurers Association, states on air of the "Commersant" radio station.

According to him, this is not a small income, with an annual turnover of over GEL 100 million per year, but the government has decided to open its doors to everyone.

"Starting from January 1, 2026, health insurance will become mandatory for foreign citizens entering Georgia. Under the new regulation, tourists must have health and accident insurance upon entry to the country. The details are unknown, but we know that any company in the world will be able to sell such packages, so there's a high likelihood tourists buy insurance at home.

Given all this, Georgian businesses will not find it particularly interesting; the industry does not expect significant revenue from it. It is not a small business, with a turnover of about 100 million GEL, but the government resolved that this would extend beyond the Georgian insurance sector, and that everyone would be able to take out such a policy.

"It is quite likely that some tourists will not have insurance and will have to purchase it at the border. In this segment Georgian companies will be able to sell package tours at the border, although there will be few of them, and this change will not bring significant income to Georgian companies," Devi Khechinashvili points out.

Note: Starting January 1, 2026, insurance will become mandatory for foreign citizens entering Georgia.
