The Chinese are not looking for chicken meat, but chicken legs - Georgian poultry farming is given new opportunities for export - the head of the Association of Poultry Development Zurab Uchumbegashvili states.
According to Uchumbegashvili chicken legs are not very popular in Georgia, although the Chinese will gladly buy them.
He also noted that the growing demand for chicken legs will increase chicken meat production in Georgia that will cut imports.
„Chicken legs are delicacy in the Chinese cuisine. They marinate in soy sauce and various seasonings. This is a very promising direction».
As for meat, currently the largest volume of frozen chicken meat and fillet in Georgia is imported from China. The chicken fillet imports from China will continue, but we’ll export chicken legs to the Chinese market from Georgia. Georgia encourages exports to China, but there are certain barriers from China. Since Memorandum is signed at the government level, there will be no such barriers on the Georgian side either.
"It is noteworthy that the Chinese market is so large that our products are a drop in the ocean for them, but the increased demand for chicken legs within the country will increase production. In production, every tetri is counted and chicken parts are sold at a low price, this product is called a "soup set" (head, legs, neck) and was sold for next to nothing. Now, when demand and price increase, production will likely to surge. If production increases, imports will decrease," says Zurab Uchumbegashvili.
Note: Memorandum of cooperation is signed between the Georgian Ministry of Environment Protection and Agriculture and the Chinese Ministry of Agriculture. According to the Minister of Environment Protection and Agriculture, Davit Songhulashvili, the Memorandum will open up opportunities for Georgia to export chicken meat.
