In the I quarter of 2023, the unemployment rate in Georgia decreased by 1.4 percentage points compared to the corresponding period of the previous year and equaled 18.0 percent.
In the I quarter of 2023, compared to the corresponding period of the previous year, the number of hired employees increased by 45.8 thousand persons (5.6%) and reached 863.5 thousand, while the number of self-employed increased by 25.4 thousand (6.6%) and equaled to 407.7 thousand. In the same period, the number of unemployed decreased by 10.4 thousand (3.6%) and equaled to 279.2 thousand. In the I quarter of 2023, the labour force participation rate (share of the labour force in the total population aged 15 and older) increased by 2.1 percentage points compared to the corresponding period of the previous year and became 52.0 percent, while the employment rate increased by 2.4 percentage points and amounted to 42.6 percent. The labour force participation rate in urban settlements increased by 1.0 percentage points, in rural settlements - by 3.2 percentage points compared to the previous year, while the employment rate increased in urban settlements by 1.2 percentage points, in rural areas - by 3.8 percentage points and equaled 43.5 and 41.3 percent, respectively.
In the first quarter of 2023, compared to the corresponding period of the previous year, the share of hired in the total number of employed decreased by 0.2 percentage points and equaled 67.9% percent.
In the I quarter of 2023, the unemployment rate decreased in urban as well as in rural settlements by 0.8 and 2.4 percentage points, respectively compared to the corresponding period of the previous year.
Traditionally, the unemployment rate is higher for men than for women. In the I quarter of 2023, compared to the corresponding period of the previous year, this indicator decreased for women by 1.7 percentage points, while it decreased by 1.1 percentage points for men and equaled 15.1 and 20.3 percent, respectively.
The labour force participation rate is higher for men than for women. In the I quarter of 2023, the indicator for women was 41.9 percent and for men – 63.6 percent. The labour force participation rate for women increased by 2.9 percentage points, while for men it increased by 1.1 percentage points, compared to the corresponding period of the previous year.
In the I quarter of 2023, the employment rate for women as well as for men increased by 3.1 and 1.6 percentage points, respectively compared to the corresponding period of the previous year.
