Cherry.ge co-founder David Chubabria explains what causes high cherry prices and notes that a decline in cherry prices should not be expected this season. In Chubabria’s words, the reason was the severe frosts in April, which practically destroyed this year's harvest. The price of cherries starts from 10 GEL in retail outlets and hits 23 GEL in chain stores.
"Shida Kartli experienced a severe frost on April 13, the temperature at night reached -5 degrees. Apart from sweet cherry, the harvest of other stone fruit crops is in a deplorable state in Shida Kartli, including apricots, peaches and plums. This year, there is no harvest in Shida Kartli. The supply is low, demand is high that causes high cost of the products. We should not wait for the price of sweet cherry to fall this season," David Chubabria notes.
According to him, the Cherry.Ge harvest this year, depending on the age and condition of the gardens, should have been 100-120 tons, although due to the April frosts, the forecast for the season has been cut to 5-10 tons.
Note: Cherry.ge gardens are located on 11 hectares in the village of Mejvriskhevi in the Gori region. 15 varieties of cherries are grown in the gardens. In total 2.5 million GEL were poured into the business, which also includes benefits from state programs.
