The most popular electric vehicles in Georgia are models costing between $8,000 and 30,000, Irakli Kukhianidze, Director of Carmark, states.
In his words, the number of electric vehicles imported into the country is growing daily, in light of rising customs duties on internal combustion engine vehicles in Georgia.
"Many consumers who had previously looked for internal combustion engine cars switched to EVs due to the April 1st law ," Irakli Kukhianidze notes.
He points out that even though electric vehicle sales were up, overall sales for all kinds of passenger cars in the country went down.
"The new customs duties have caused a 60% decrease in our company's sales. EVs account for a significant share of the 40% sales," Carmark CEO says and adds that the United States is still the main source of electric vehicles coming into the country, but the share of Chinese cars is also on the rise.
Note: in the first quarter of this year, 2,201 EVs were imported into the country, with a total value of $34 million against 1,630 units last year. This dynamic is on the rise, and car importers forecast a further surge in EV imports to Georgia in the nearest future.
