US President Donald Trump has noted that the Strait of Hormuz will remain safe, adding that his administration would be "waiving certain oil-related sanctions" on some countries.
The president spoke at a news conference in Florida on Monday.
Referring to the ongoing US-Israeli military operation against Iran, Trump said, "We're achieving major strides toward completing our military objective, and some people could say they're pretty well complete."
He added: "We're winning very decisively. We're way ahead of schedule."
He also spoke about the Strait of Hormuz, a key waterway for oil transport that is now effectively closed. He said the strait "is going to remain safe."
Trump said: "We have a lot of navy ships there. We have the best equipment in the world, inspecting for mines."
He also hinted that he would temporarily lift sanctions related to crude oil on some countries. The move appears to be aimed at reducing spiking oil prices, but he did not say which countries he would remove sanctions from.
Trump referred to Iran's selection of Mojtaba Khamenei, the second son of the country's late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, as his successor. He expressed disappointment about the choice and said that it would "repeatedly cause the same problem for Iran."
