Iceland closes its embassy in Moscow as of today, as a result of the war between Russia and Ukraine, becoming the first European country to take such a measure. The Icelandic press reports it. Last June the Icelandic foreign minister, Thordis Gylfadottir, explained that the situation related to the conflict does not allow the country's diplomatic representation to operate in Russia.

The Foreign Ministry of Reykjavik however, he specified in a note that the closure of the embassy in Moscow does not represent a break in relations with Russia, and that "as soon as conditions allow, Iceland will give priority to the resumption of activities in Moscow". The Icelandic embassy in the Russian capital also handled the representation of Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. Starting today, the representation of these countries will be handled by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Reykjavik.
