“There are currently no expectations or preconditions for an increase in natural gas tariffs; there may be only very minimal adjustments. The increase will affect electricity tariffs,” said David Narmania, Chair of the Georgian National Energy and Water Supply Regulatory Commission (GNERC), during his visit to the Media Center Main press club.
According to him, tariffs will be set at the Commission’s session on December 29.
“At the end of the current year, the regulatory commission must recalculate consumer electricity tariffs. Over the past two years, we reduced consumer tariffs by 3 tetri. On December 29, at the Commission’s session, the regulatory commission will set new consumer tariffs in the electricity sector. At this stage, the review of electricity and natural gas tariffs is ongoing.
There are no expectations or preconditions for an increase in natural gas tariffs at this time; there may be only very minimal adjustments. The increase will affect electricity tariffs. However, it is difficult for me today to name specific figures or a specific percentage increase, as the regulatory commission is working on the issue on a daily basis.
I would also like to emphasize the decisions taken by the regulatory commission that have had a direct impact on consumers. First of all, these concern incorrectly charged fees or outdated debts, the write-off of which the commission addressed throughout the year based on submitted applications. In total, the amount written off in favor of consumers through this mechanism is up to 1 million GEL.
It is also important that for violations of regulatory rules established by the commission, as well as for breaches of established deadlines, our system automatically credited compensation to consumers. Over the course of the year, the total compensation credited to consumers—paid by utility companies—amounted to more than 5.7 million GEL,” Narmania stated.
