To foster the development of the automotive industry in Georgia, new cars need to be popularized and additional regulations, especially on emissions, must be introduced, according to Levan Asanishvili, Deputy General Director of Strada Motors. In his words, this will, in turn, improve the environmental situation.
Asanishvili points out that a key problem in Georgia's automotive industry today is the considerable freedom enjoyed by non-official dealers.
"The informal market in Georgia operates more efficiently. There should be some kind of filter applied to this type of import. Additional regulations are primarily needed concerning emissions. It's better for everyone if consumers purchase new cars instead of used ones."
"If you look at the market overall, it's really a used car market because so many second-hand cars come into Georgia. "With support in this regard and a shift in consumer interest towards new cars, the environmental situation will naturally improve," Levan Asanishvili notes.
He believes that the influx of Chinese brands into the Georgian market has caused a decline in European car sales.
Note: Strada Motors, representing global automotive brands such as FIAT, Jeep, Alfa Romeo, Dodge, and RAM, has now become the official dealer of Chevrolet in Georgia.
