It is important for people who harass others to receive appropriate consequences and impose sanctions on them - I believe that Donald Trump will stand by the Georgian people and not the regime that rigged the elections, said Republican congressman Joe Wilson, chairman of the Helsinki Commission of the United States of America, in an interview with "Global News".
According to him, an appropriate response should be given to the organization of violence and "everyone who believes in freedom and democracy should stand together against this crime".
"It is truly inspiring to see how the Georgian people continue to protest despite the violence against them. This is a kind of continuation of the tradition, which we saw in the past in Bucharest, East Germany, Budapest, and other countries. We remember how the entire society stood up against Soviet imperialism, stood up against evil and gained freedom. People power always brings positive change. In the end, inevitably, freedom wins. So, I am sure, the Georgian people will succeed in protecting the future of democratic, free Georgia and will become a part of the European Union and NATO", says Joe Wilson.
Regarding the direct elections, Wilson says that the parliamentary elections in Georgia were not conducted in such a way that they were reliable both for the Georgian people and for the world.
"In my opinion, we have seen a lot of violations in Georgia, which were substantiated by both the EU and other international observers. I would not have made such a statement if the illegitimacy of "Georgian Dream" being in power had not been proven. Parliamentary elections were not held in such a way that it was reliable both for the Georgian people and for the world. They conducted the elections with manipulative interventions, violated the constitution, approved the government without the consent of the president and continue to brutally abuse those who protest all this in Georgia. That's why I consider them as illegitimate government," said Joe Wilson.
As for the relationship between Georgia and the United States under the new administration, Joe Wilson says that Donald Trump "also objects to the election, which may have been conducted irregularly."
"Donald Trump stands for freedom. He supports democracy. Donald Trump is also a person who also objects to the election, which may have been conducted irregularly. Therefore, I believe that Donald Trump will stand by the Georgian people and not by the regime that falsified the elections", says Wilson.
