Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko has won the presidential election with 86.82% of the vote, the Belarusian Central Elections Commission (CEC) said on Monday, citing preliminary information.

"There is the following preliminary information regarding the number of votes gained by each presidential candidate in the Republic of Belarus: Oleg Gaidukevich - 2.02 %, Anna Kanopatskaya - 1.86%, Alexander Lukashenko - 86.82%, Sergei Syrankov - 3.21%, Alexander Khizhnyak - 1.74%, none of the above - 3.60%." the CEC said.

According to the CEC, the voter turnout reached 85.7%. The election is declared valid in case of the voter turnout exceeding 50%. A candidate who gains over half of votes wins the election.

There were five candidates in the election, namely, Lukashenko, who has been in office since 1994, parliament member, Liberal Democratic Party Chairman Oleg Gaidukevich, Republican Party of Labor and Justice Chairman Alexander Khizhnyak, former parliament member, 2020 presidential candidate Anna Kanopatskaya, and Belarusian Communist Party Central Committee First Secretary Sergei Syrankov.

The CEC will sum up final election results in ten days, by February 5.
