According to the Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development, the new Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway line will officially become operational on June 2.
The ministry stated that the new railway line is a joint strategic project of Georgia, Azerbaijan, and Turkey, playing an important role in strengthening connectivity between Europe and Asia. The new railway route provides additional transit capacity in the region, significantly contributes to the diversification of freight transport routes, and enhances regional connectivity.
As noted in the statement, the total length of the Marabda-Kartsakhi railway section is 180 kilometers. Within the framework of the project, 153 kilometers of railway were rehabilitated and reconstructed, while a completely new 27-kilometer railway line built to European standards was constructed.
"The volume of freight transportation on the new Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway line has been increasing annually. With the line entering full operation, the project's annual capacity will increase to 5 million tons, enabling the region to handle additional cargo flows and significantly strengthening its transport capabilities.
The full commissioning of this railway section became possible following the signing of the protocol of the bilateral coordination council by Georgia's Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development, Mariam Kvrivishvili, and Azerbaijan's Minister of Digital Development and Transport, Rashad Nabiyev, during the visit of the Prime Minister of Georgia to Baku, Azerbaijan," the statement said.
