The sewing industry is experiencing staff shortages. Despite the difficult work, wages in the industry are still low, which is why job seekers are reluctant to work in the garment industry. The average salary of a tailor ranges within GEL700-800. The sewing factory"Imeri" based in Kutaisi is experiencing staff shortages. Director Maya Simonidze told Commersant about the reasons for the lack of personnel in the industry.

"The staff shortage is definitely a problem as our work is not highly paid. Due to low salary, our citizens don’t want to work in the sewing business. So far, we manage to cope with this problem. Our work is not easy and not highly paid, it’s cheap labor," says Maya Simonidze.

Today, 120 tailors are employed at Imeri, but the company needs to hire another 50 employees due to the number of orders.

Low wages discourage people from working in the garment industry that causes a labor shortage. Increasing wages creates another problem. Brands around the world search for cheap labor and place orders from countries where it is cheaper to produce. If wages increase, orders from abroad will stop and will look for a cheaper alternative.
