Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said on Thursday the government would announce a support package next week aimed at containing heating oil costs ahead of the winter season, with contributions from both the state and domestic refineries.
Speaking to state broadcaster ERT, Mitsotakis said heating oil would go on sale at a price below €1.75 per litre, the level at which the previous season ended.
He said the package would include a blanket increase in heating allowances and that the government was considering reintroducing a cap on profit margins, without providing further details.
Mitsotakis also said support measures for diesel fuel would be extended through October.
The announcements come as European countries continue to face pressure from elevated energy costs.
Mitsotakis said that Greece was in a stronger position than many of its European peers despite international market turbulence, noting that the country was borrowing more cheaply than Italy and France and that fuel supply adequacy was secured.
