Artificial intelligence may exceed the sum of human intelligence in about five years, billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk said in an interview with The Economist.
Musk said AI inspires both concern and admiration, but added that he remains optimistic about its long-term potential.
He predicted that by around 2036, robots and AI systems will be capable of performing most physical and intellectual work, making employment a matter of personal choice rather than economic necessity.
According to Musk, such technological progress could usher in an era of "incredible abundance," with money gradually losing much of its traditional importance.
He also suggested that governments would only need to provide citizens with financial support, as machine-driven production of goods and services could become virtually unlimited. In that scenario, he said, the risk of deflation would outweigh the risk of inflation.
