In January-February 2025, Georgia purchased electricity worth almost $20 million. In the corresponding period of 2024, a total of $1.6 million was imported. The reason for this was that in January-February last year, Georgia purchased electricity only for the consumption of Abkhazia, which receives electricity from Russia at a low price.
For example, in 2024, the total amount paid for imported electricity amounted to $23.5 million, which is an average of 1.9 cents per kWh. Imports for the Abkhazian region are carried out at a special price of 0.1 cents per kWh, which has a significant impact on the average price of imports.
In addition, in January-February of this year, the main suppliers of electricity to Georgia were Azerbaijan and Armenia instead of Russia, from which Georgia bought electricity worth more than $19 million. Only $400,000 worth of electricity was purchased from Russia. The change in importing countries was likely reflected in the price, although the exact amount the country paid for kWh of electricity will only be known after the publication of the volumes of imported electricity.
