Doha, September 28, 2026 — The Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) and the Government of Georgia signed a financing agreement for EUR158.42 million (approximately USD182 million) for the Trans-Caspian Transport Corridor – Georgia Accessibility and Transport Enhancement Project. The Project will improve safe, efficient and climate-resilient road connectivity in Georgia’s Kakheti region while strengthening links to national and cross-border trade corridors.

The investment will finance 67.4 kilometers of climate-resilient road infrastructure in eastern Georgia, including two new four-lane sections between Badiauri and Bakurtsikhe and the 36.6-kilometer Gurjaani–Telavi section. By improving connections between the Azerbaijan border, the East-West Highway and Black Sea ports, the Project will strengthen Georgia’s domestic and regional connectivity and reinforce its role along the Trans-Caspian Transport Corridor. More than 900,000 people are expected to benefit directly from safer and more reliable travel, shorter journey times, and improved access to markets, services and trade corridors.

“AIIB to helps develop more connected, reliable and resilient end-to-end corridors through selective investments in critical links”, said Konstantin Limitovskiy, Chief Investment Officer, Public Sector (Region 2) & Project and Corporate Finance Clients (Global), AIIB. “This investment supports the Trans-Caspian Transport Corridor and contributes to more efficient and resilient connectivity between Asia and Europe”.

The Project will also support a National Highway Control Centre and Intelligent Transport System, strengthen climate-informed road management and planning, and provide analytical support for future transport investments. It will also support rural women entrepreneurs in Kakheti, helping local communities benefit more directly from the economic opportunities created by improved connectivity.

“The agreement signed with the AIIB represents yet another significant step towards increasing the efficiency of the Middle Corridor and will contribute to the development of Georgia’s transport infrastructure”, said H.E. Lasha Khutsishvili, Minister of Finance of Georgia. “I would like to express my gratitude to the AIIB for its support and cooperation. I hope that our bilateral partnership will continue to actively develop in the future”.

The agreement was signed on the sidelines of AIIB’s 11th Annual Meeting in Doha, Qatar. Co-financed with the World Bank as the lead co-financier, the Project has an estimated total cost of USD362.14 million.

Aligned with AIIB’s thematic priorities of Green Infrastructure, Connectivity and Regional Cooperation, and Technology-enabled Infrastructure, the project combines climate-resilient infrastructure, digitalized road management and climate-informed planning to support a safer, more resilient and better-connected transport network.

Georgia is an AIIB Member since 2017. This project will increase AIIB’s portfolio in Georgia to nine projects totaling approximately USD848.6 million equivalent across various sectors including transport, health infrastructure, sustainable finance, energy and economic resilience.
