Ukraine
does not want to put up with Germany's refusal to supply arms to
Kiev. The Ukrainian Ambassador in Berlin, Andrew Melnik, even named
specific types of weapons that his country would like to receive from
Germany. «First of all, we are talking about warships — some of
the best in the world, which we urgently need to effectively protect
the long coast of the Black and Azov Seas», he said in an interview
with the dpa agency, published on Wednesday, January 19.
According
to Melnik, his country also urgently needs the most modern
anti-aircraft systems, which, as he noted, are produced by German
defense concerns. Ukraine has been seeking arms supplies from Germany
for many years to protect against a possible Russian invasion, but so
far without success.
German
Chancellor Olaf Scholz once again rejected Kiev's requests on the
eve, stressing that Germany has been pursuing a balanced strategy for
many years, excluding the export of lethal weapons. German Foreign
Minister Annalena Baerbock, during a visit to Kiev on January 17,
also rejected Ukraine's demands.
Marie-Agnes
Zimmermann, chairman of the Bundestag Defense Committee, believes
that it is necessary to think about the possibility of supplying
weapons to Ukraine for self-defense. «In the coalition agreement, we
agreed that we would not supply weapons to crisis regions. But, given
the current situation and the threat to our continent, we must
reconsider this position in this particular case. The supply of
defensive weapons could provide an opportunity to support Ukraine»,
a representative of the Free Democratic Party said in an interview
with the t-online news portal.
