Parliament adopts amendments on transferring state forests to Georgia’s Patriarchate

The parliament has adopted the draft Forest Code and the package of legislative changes in the third reading, according to which, some of the forest areas may be transferred to the Patriarchate.


According to the draft amendments to the Law on State Property, Georgian Orthodox Church will be enabled to take into ownership the forest (not more than 20 hectare (200,000m²) for each case) located nearby the churches and monasteries, and also territories of the forests that were already in possession of the Church..


The transfer of forest may be carried out on the basis of the relevant application of the Apostolic Orthodox Church of Georgia and the mediation of the Ministry of Environment Protection and Agriculture of Georgia.
