Number of asylum seekers from Georgia to the EU up 68%

According to the 2022 report of the European Union Agency for Asylum, the number of asylum seekers from Georgia in the European Union and the Schengen area increased by 68% last year and amounted to 14,970. France accounts for 37% of asylum applications.

Vano Chkhikvadze, EU Integration Programme Manager at Open Society Georgia Foundation (OSGF), says that in 2021 the number of asylum applications by Georgian citizens in the EU and Schengen zone member states increased compared to the previous year.

"Most applications were made for asylum in France. France accounts for  37% (about 5 539) of the total applications made in 2021. Initial asylum claims of  10,590 Georgian citizens were refused in 2021. Germany accounts for the largest number of refusals, namely 28% of total applications), - Vano Chkhikvadze notes.


The number of Georgian citizens seeking asylum in the EU and Schengen zone countries is as follows: 2016 – 8,775; 2017 – 12,060; 2018 – 20,950; 2019 – 22,765; 2020 – 8,905; 2021 – 14,970.
