As winter approaches, interest in Georgian winter resorts, especially Gudauri, is growing. Both Georgian citizens and foreigners started booking hotel rooms.

Owners of local hotels anxiously expect a decline in the number of tourists due to Russia’s travel ban.

They say  last year the Russians accounted for 90% of the total reservations , but this year, due to the ban, not a single reservation has been  made from Russia so far, although they still hope that the Russian tourists will find ways  to come to the resorts.

Among the problems that concern the local tourism industry are bad internal roads, sidewalks, non-operational  garbage removal and unregulated public transport.

Levan Karichashvili, Director of the Truso hotel, says that the tourist season is likely to open on December 15 and expects a significant decline  in the number of Russian tourists.

“90% of the reservations in our hotel were made by  Russian citizens. But let’s wait,  a whole month is still ahead,  they might  come to Georgia by indirect flights. As for   the infrastructure and transport,  these are still unresolved problems, ” the hotel owner explains.

Director at Quadrum hotel Irakli Eristiavi considers the absence of sidewalks as the main problem of Gudauri.

“Tourists often complain that they have to walk along the carriageway that is quite dangerous given  the climate.  They often have to take a taxi, which is quite expensive,” he notes.

In Eristavi’s words, last year 25% of the hotel guests were citizens of Russia, he suggests that the travel ban will not cause  significant changes.

“Many tourists want to walk in fine weather, but they cannot do this because they will have to walk along the roadway due to the lack of sidewalks. They have to take a taxi that is not cheap in Gudauri, ” the hotel owner says.

The owners of the Edelweiss hotel are speaks about a declining  number of reservations.

“90% of our guests were foreigners, mostly from Russia. We have already started selling reservations but so far no one has bought them, ” the hotel’s management says.
