The revenue of Georgian companies from the export of in-shell walnuts and walnut kernels for the first time exceeded $ 1 million in 2019.

EastFruit analysts say that Georgia, which has long been a major net importer of walnuts, dramatically increased exports of this product. In 2019, exports of walnut kernels from Georgia increased 10-fold and reached 321 tons.

This is still a relatively small volume, and exports are still lower than imports, but the trend is very impressive. Georgian companies for the first time earned exceeded $ 1 million and reached $ 1.4 million in 2019 from the export of in-shell walnuts and walnut kernels.

Imports of walnut kernels in Georgia decreased by 11% and amounted to 1.1 thousand tons. Ukraine remained the main supplier of the product to the Georgian market, which reduced supplies by 15% from 1.2 thousand tons to 1.0 thousand tons.

The main markets for Georgian walnut in 2019 were Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia and Belarus. About 16 tons of walnut from Georgia were exported to the UAE, India and the Czech Republic.

Recall that, according to the economist of the investment department of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) Andrei Yarmak, over time Georgia can earn  more from nuts export than from export of wine. The expert believes that apart from hazelnuts, almonds, walnuts and even pistachios can be successfully grown in Georgia. Georgia will be able to compete on the global walnut market with Ukraine, Moldova and Uzbekistan.
