The   Competition Agency began to study the pharmaceutical market to reveal monopolists or cartels. Currently, the information is being  collected  and processed.

It is yet unknown when the first stage and the study are planned to be completed.

The  monitoring will be conducted  not in separate  pharmacy chains, but in the entire industry as a whole, and envisages  legal and economic analysis.

“The monitoring group is studying the pharmaceutical market to reveal  any violations of antitrust laws. The Agency will study the cost of  medicines when  imported, and at what price they are sold by local companies. We should  find out whether there are monopolies or cartels on the market to  hold unfair and high drug prices, ” the Agency says.

It is supposed to study the prices of 12,000 most popular medicines on the market.

Head of the Competition Agency Nodar Khaduri said in 2019 that the competition authorities  would  begin to study the situation on the Georgian pharmaceutical market.

This is a long-term project that will be implemented in two stages.

“We are holding preliminary consultations with business community  and non-governmental sector  on the drugs to be  explored. Most likely, at the first stage, the most popular and  best-selling  medicines will be studied, ” Nodar Khaduri said.
